The aesthetic beauty of Islamic calligraphy is only half the story. Unfortunately, the meaning of the words presented in these works is lost to those who don’t read Arabic or don’t understand the meaning behind the transliterations.

The following lessons are an attempt to help our visitors recognize and understand some of the words and phrases most commonly found in works of Islamic calligraphy.

As background, all you need to know is that Arabic is writted from right to left. Eveything else will be explained as you continue through the lessons, which were created so as to be completed in order. [If you’d like to begin with a lesson on the Arabic letters themselves, click here]
